Farmer Markets

Local Farmers’ Market

Looking for a Farmers’ Market in Iowa?

Iowa has some of the best locally grown food around.  Summer is the most exciting time to find that perfect vegetable you need to add to the table.  Or maybe you’re looking for a place to try some wonderful food and walk around enjoying the sights of the growers’ labor?  The Local Farmers Market is where you want to be.

Most folks think the time to visit farmers markets would be Saturday mornings, but that’s not necessarily true.  I have found in my area I can visit one on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, as well as one on Sunday morning.  So the options can suit your lifestyle.  If you just want to pop in and grab a few groceries or spend time strolling down the street, looking through the list of markets that are around will be with your time to review.

Since it began in 1976, the Des Moines market has grown from 15 vendors to more than 200, and now averages 20,000 visitors each Saturday. In addition to Iowa-grown, chemical-free produce and local meats and cheeses, there are six venues for arts, crafts and entertainment, plus a weekly kids' activity to enchant the younger attendees. Spanning nine city blocks, is it any wonder people line up for the Farm Boys' breakfast burritos to help them power through? For a more uncommon taste, check out Pupusasa El Salvador, a Salvadoran-style maize-flour tortilla stuffed with cheese, beans, or meat.(Des Moines Downtown Farmers' Market, Saturdays, May 4-October 26, 7am-12pm. There's also a smaller Wednesday market in late summer, and an occasional Winter market.)

I am lucky enough to live in Central Iowa, where farmers’ markets are bountiful.  The biggest crowd and most vendors will be at Iowa’s Capital City, Des Moines. Downtown, you can shop or eat your way through the morning. You will find entertainment, musicians, and activities for the kids. This past weekend some of my neighbors and friends helped a young man ask the Big Question!  And she said, YES!  (view video here)  You never know what you will see when walking along with your donut.  If you want to read more about this great farmers’ market go to  Des Moines Farmers Market.

In the Central Iowa, we have more than 5 other neighborhood markets I can visit in the Des Moines area alone.  I live in Ankeny. Saturday mornings are hopping with Yoga in the Park, Bike Trails busy with riders, and hungry people checking out what is available to buy from the local producers. Anyone needing some yummy sampling should set your alarm and go investigate the summer foods we can buy from our hard working farmers.

I love to cook! So this is my haven.  I enjoy the smell, the colors, and the possibilities of what I might create from all the splendor. So come and delight yourself with all this goodness,
